Sunrise Spots for Morning Meditation and Yoga Draw Early Risers to Raleigh Parks
Raleigh's parks open their gates before dawn for residents seeking quiet sessions of yoga and meditation as summer heat builds.
How we reported this

Raleigh residents have increased their use of city parks for sunrise yoga and meditation by 28 percent since last summer, according to attendance logs kept by Raleigh Parks and Recreation.
The shift comes as daytime temperatures climb above 85 degrees by mid-morning most days in July, pushing people outdoors earlier to avoid the worst of the heat and humidity. Local fitness instructors report that classes now fill faster when they begin at first light rather than after 8 a.m.
Two parks draw the largest morning crowds
Pullen Park on Pullen Road offers flat lawns near the rose garden that stay shaded until the sun clears the tree line around 6:30 a.m. Dorothea Dix Park on Western Boulevard provides open fields with views toward the downtown skyline, where groups often gather near the old hospital water tower. Both sites lie within a ten-minute drive of most central Raleigh neighborhoods and allow free entry before official opening hours for quiet activities.
Raleigh Parks and Recreation began tracking sunrise program participation in 2023. The department recorded 1,240 individual visits to organized yoga and meditation events across its properties during the month of June this year. Drop-in sessions at Pullen Park run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 a.m. and cost nothing to attend, though participants must bring their own mats.
How to join a session this week
Check the Raleigh Parks website the night before for any weather cancellations, then arrive with a headlamp or phone light for the first ten minutes of setup. Water fountains at both Pullen and Dix parks turn on at 6 a.m., and restrooms open shortly after. Instructors advise wearing light layers because the temperature can rise ten degrees by the time a 45-minute session ends.
Those new to the routine can start with the free Tuesday class at Pullen Park, then try the Saturday sunrise walk-and-stretch route that begins at the Dix Park main gate at 6:05 a.m. Both options require no advance registration.
